About Us
At Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, we have a purpose-built TYA inpatient and day care facility that offers accommodation appropriate for young people's needs. It opened in March 2014, funded by Teenage Cancer Trust.
Known as the TYA team, we work with young people aged 16-24 years across the South West of England who have been diagnosed with cancer. This is to ensure that all young people are able, whenever possible and appropriate, to access treatment locally.
Our aim is to provide specialist age-appropriate care and psychological, emotional, financial, practical, educational and social support to young people with cancer, their family and friends. Our dedicated team of specialists have expert knowledge in looking after young people with different types of cancer, leukaemia and brain tumours - from the common to the very rare.
We know that the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer are both complex and individual, and are not the same as the needs of children or older adults.
We have a specialist team of professionals who will support you throughout and beyond your cancer diagnosis and treatment, and respond to your emotional, social and practical needs, remembering that you are a young person and an individual.
The TYA Team will work in a positive, flexible, creative way to meet your needs and recognise your priorities. They will also support your family, friends, partner, colleagues, teachers... basically, anyone who is also affected by what you are going through.
By Bus
Many of the Bristol bus routes pass through the city centre. To reach BHOC from the city centre it is necessary to walk up a steep hill. If you arrive in the city centre and have mobility needs or difficulty walking, the number 77 bus going to Southmead stops 20 metres from the hospital main entrance. Ask for the Horfield Road stop.
If you need transport from the centre of Bristol to BHOC there are free hospital shuttle buses from the bus station, railway station, and Cabot Circus shopping centre. Find out more about Cabot Circus parking and the free hospital bus here.
By Rail
The closest station to the hospital is Bristol Temple Meads. The hospital's free shuttle bus operates from the station, Monday to Friday during daytime hours. Please be aware that at present this service is unable to transport patients who are wheelchair users.
Parking
Car parking on site is limited, with a number of paid car parks controlled by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras (ANPR). Please check the Hospital website via the button for charges. We recommend parking at Cabot Circus and using the free hospital shuttle bus to BHOC.
If you need to bring your car to the hospital, discounted parking for patients and carers is available. Please ask at Main Reception when you arrive.
If you are on regular treatment, you can buy a weekly season ticket from BHOC main reception. The pass is valid in any hopsital car park. This does not guarantee you a space in the hospital car parks, and you will need to bring change for the ticket machine.
